As the weather warms, many cat owners consider letting their feline companions explore the outdoors. While the idea of a cat basking in the sun or chasing butterflies is charming, the reality is that outdoor environments pose significant risks to feline health.
šØ Risks of Outdoor Exposure
1. Parasites and Disease Transmission
Outdoor cats are at a heightened risk of contracting parasites like fleas and ticks, which can transmit serious diseases such as Lyme disease and feline hemotropic mycoplasmosis.
2. Accidents and Injuries
Cats roaming freely may encounter traffic, leading to accidents. They might also engage in fights with other animals, resulting in injuries or infections.
3. Exposure to Toxins
Pesticides, antifreeze, and other toxic substances are more accessible outdoors, posing poisoning risks to curious cats.
š”ļø The Role of CredelioĀ® (Lotilaner) in Protection
CredelioĀ® CAT is the first and only oral flea and tick preventative approved for cats. Its active ingredient, lotilaner, belongs to the isoxazoline class and works by targeting the nervous system of parasites, leading to their death.
Efficacy and Safety
In a randomized, controlled field study, lotilaner demonstrated over 98% efficacy in reducing flea counts within 30 days. Three consecutive monthly treatments resulted in nearly 100% reduction in flea infestation. The flavored tablets were well accepted by cats, and adverse reactions were mild and infrequent, confirming the safety of lotilaner tablets in client-owned cats.
š Safer Alternatives for Enrichment
To satisfy your cat's curiosity while ensuring safety:
Supervised Outdoor Time: Use a harness and leash for controlled exploration
"Catios" or Enclosed Spaces: Provide a secure outdoor enclosure for fresh air and stimulation.
Interactive Indoor Play: Engage your cat with toys and activities that mimic hunting behaviors.
