Dental health is a critical, yet often overlooked, part of your pet’s overall wellbeing. At Main Street Markham Animal Clinic, we routinely see how untreated dental disease impacts not only the mouth, but the entire body. February is Dental Health Month, and to support proactive care, we are offering a limited-time dental promotion to help pets receive timely and appropriate treatment.

Why dental care is essential for dogs and cats
Most dogs and cats over the age of three have some degree of dental disease, even if they appear comfortable and continue eating normally. Plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline leads to gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth root infections, pain, and eventual tooth loss. Oral bacteria can also enter the bloodstream, contributing to systemic inflammation and placing strain on organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. Bad breath is often the earliest visible sign, but dental disease is progressive and painful when left untreated.
What is a COHAT and why it matters
A COHAT, or Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment, is the gold standard for veterinary dental care. It is performed under general anesthesia, allowing a complete and pain-free evaluation of the mouth. A COHAT includes dental probing, full-mouth assessment, full-mouth dental radiographs to evaluate tooth roots and bone health below the gumline, professional scaling and polishing above and below the gumline, detailed dental charting, and extractions or treatments when medically indicated. Many serious dental problems occur beneath the surface and are not visible during a conscious exam, which is why dental radiographs are essential for accurate diagnosis and complete treatment. This is a medical procedure focused on treating infection, relieving pain, and improving long-term health, not a cosmetic cleaning.
February Dental Promotion details
For February, we are offering a 20% courtesy discount on COHAT procedures, applied to the COHAT line item only. This promotion is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to limited February availability. Scheduling is based on available February surgery dates. This initiative is designed to improve access to essential dental care while ensuring pets are appropriately assessed and safely scheduled.
How to qualify for the promotion
To ensure appropriate care and accurate treatment planning, pets must first attend a 15-minute Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) dental grading appointment. During this visit, an oral exam is performed, a dental grade is assigned, dental records are completed, and expectations for the COHAT procedure are reviewed. Pre-anesthetic blood work is discussed or confirmed, and whenever possible, the COHAT surgery is booked during the same visit.
An RVT dental grading appointment may be waived if your pet has been seen within the past year and a veterinarian has already recommended a COHAT.
For new clients, up-to-date vaccinations are required, and an annual wellness exam may be required at the discretion of the veterinarian prior to booking a dental procedure. This process helps ensure transparency, patient safety, and smooth scheduling.
What to expect on surgery day
Following the RVT dental grading appointment, your pet’s COHAT is scheduled based on February availability. The appropriate dental estimate is selected according to your pet’s dental grade, and the promotional discount is automatically applied. Pre-anesthetic blood work is confirmed or completed to ensure your pet is a safe candidate for anesthesia. On the day of the procedure, our team will perform a full oral assessment including dental radiographs, complete indicated treatments, and send your pet home with clear aftercare guidance.
Important notes about availability
February dental spaces are limited, and the promotion is offered while spots remain available. If February fills, our team will still be happy to book your pet for the next available dental date without the promotional discount. Dental health remains a year-round priority, and ongoing care is always available outside of promotional periods.
Book early to protect your pet’s health
Dental disease does not resolve on its own, and early treatment leads to better outcomes, reduced pain, and fewer complications over time. If you have noticed bad breath, visible tartar, red or inflamed gums, pawing at the mouth, or changes in eating behaviour, this is an excellent opportunity to address your pet’s oral health.
